Event Description

You are warmly invited to join us on Monday 13th May, 10am to 1pm at Wolvesey, Winchester, for a morning exploring the life and work of St John of the Cross.

Our understanding and appreciation of the life and teaching of the Spanish Carmelite, St John of the Cross (1542 – 1591) has advanced considerably in recent years. As scholars and Christians come to appreciate his originality and compassion this has led to a reappraisal of his message. In our time together we shall learn a little about his life and times before focussing on his relevance to contemporary Christian spiritual practice, especially spiritual direction.

The session will be led by Peter Tyler. Peter is Professor of Pastoral Theology and Spirituality and Director of the Centre for Initiatives in Spirituality and Reconciliation (InSpiRe) at St Mary`s University, Twickenham, London. Having completed his doctoral studies at Durham University on Carmelite mystical spirituality he has since written and edited fourteen books on the area, the most recent being John of the Cross: Carmel, Desire and Transformation (with Edward Howells, Routledge, 2024). He is a UKCP registered psychotherapist in private practice and a spiritual director.
