Inspired by Winchester Cathedral’s light of hope, St James Pokesdown have made their own version using some plastic tubes from Dorset Scrapstore!
Light of Hope Schools Project
The Priory Church of England Primary school took part in a ‘light of hope’ project to mark the start of Advent. During a ‘prayer buddy’ act of worship, the children sat in pairs with someone from a different year group, followed a short reflection, then turned out their little lights as a reminder that even a small light can penetrate the darkness – and together we can make a big difference!
Crafty start to Advent at St Mary’s Kingsworthy
At St Mary’s monthly ‘Breakfast Church’ service, the first Sunday of Advent was marked through craft and activities for both children and adults – including making Advent jam jar lights, mini Advent wreaths out of pipe cleaners, and a reflective station using the LICC Action Advent resource.
Cafe Church and Christingles at Sherfield on Loddon
St Leonards Church, Sherfield on Loddon marked the beginning of Advent and the countdown to Christmas in style with Cafe Church, including an Advent quiz and Christingle making.

The churchyard was beautifully decorated with lights at All Saints Odiham to welcome people to a service of traditional Advent Carols.
Reflective Responses at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Four Marks
The team at The Church of the Good Shepherd Church, Four Marks, are leading daily reflections on YouTube on four themes over the four weeks of Advent – Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy. All participants are invited to begin worship by lighting a candle.
