Medieval Community Fete Celebrates 900 Years of Newnham Church

On Saturday, 20th September, villagers and local people gathered to celebrate the second part of Newnham 900, marking 900 years of St Nicholas Church Newnham, having celebrated at a wonderful service in June with the Bishop of Winchester. It brought together members of the church and community as well as being supported by local businesses.

There was a medieval fete during the day and a banquet in the evening.  The day featured many attractions, including Norman reenactments of a fashion show, a shire or church court, a Norman battle, archery, falconry displays and Morris men, as well as a hog roast.

There were some modern-day attractions too, such as tea and cakes made by villagers and the local hotel Tylney Hall, Cove Brass Band, bouncy castles, stalls, hair braiding, face paints and glitter tattoos.  A history book was on sale written by local historian Nigel Bell, about the story of Newnham through the ages.

Revd Debbie Veel said, “There was literally something for everyone of every age.  In the evening, we had a magnificent medieval banquet.   I’d like to thank everyone, especially the Newnham 900 planning team for all their work over the last 18 plus months, and all the people who came along and supported us.  We had a fabulous day and an amazing celebration, despite dodging the rain from time to time!”

We were particularly impressed by the size of the mega meringue that was part of the banquet – see the photo below!
