Downing Street has announced today that The Venerable Jean Burgess, currently the Archdeacon of Bournemouth in the Diocese of Winchester, will be the next Bishop of Grimsby.
Revd Jean joined the Diocese of Winchester in 2023 as Archdeacon of the southern region of our diocese, covering parishes and communities in the deaneries of Bournemouth, Christchurch, Eastleigh, Lyndhurst, Romsey and Southampton. Before that she was Archdeacon of Bolton and Salford in Manchester Diocese and prior to that served as a parish priest in the Diocese of Derby. Before training for ordination, Jean spent over 20 years working in the NHS as a nurse.
“I am very excited about this new opportunity to serve God in the diocese of Lincoln,” said Jean. “And yet I will miss the community here in the diocese of Winchester. I have only been here a couple of years but in that time I have met and worked with some wonderful people in the parishes and schools of Hampshire and Dorset. I will be praying for you as I say farewell and hope you will pray for me too.”

The Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen, said, “Jean Burgess has been a wonderful blessing to us in the Diocese of Winchester over these last few years, bringing warm common sense and deep faith to her work as an Archdeacon, in way that has made a real and tangible difference to many. It’s no surprise to me that she’s now been called to be Bishop of Grimsby. We will miss her but wish her and Graham God’s richest blessing for this next stage of the journey. I’ve no doubt she will be a great blessing go the people of the Diocese of Lincoln.’
The Bishop of Southampton, the Rt Revd Rhiannon King, said, “Jean has been a huge help to me throughout my first year in this diocese, for which I’ll always be grateful. I wish her all the very best as she moves to Grimsby.”
Revd Jean will be consecrated as a bishop and then installed as Bishop of Grimsby in the new year. Please join us in thanking Jean for her work amongst us and praying for God’s rich blessing as she takes this next step in her ministry.
