Bishop Assiel Visits Brockenhurst and Sway: A Day of Fellowship and Faith

On Sunday 19 October, Lyndhurst Deanery was honoured to welcome Bishop Assiel and his wife Valerie from Kigeme Diocese, Rwanda, for a joyful and spiritually enriching visit to Brockenhurst and Sway.

Morning Worship in Brockenhurst

Bishop Assiel preached at both morning services in Brockenhurst, sharing a powerful message of resilience and hope. His reflections on the growth of the Rwandan church—despite significant challenges—deeply moved the congregation, so much so, that they even joined in with the Bishop and his wife in dancing, clapping and singing! After worship a convivial lunch added warmth to the fellowship and a time for discussions around how to build on existing links.

Evensong at St Luke’s, Sway

In the afternoon, Bishop Assiel joined the congregation at St Luke’s, Sway, for a beautifully sung Evensong. The day concluded with tea and cakes, rounding off a memorable visit filled with hospitality and heartfelt connection.

Strengthening Global Ties

Lyndhurst Deanery has a longstanding relationship with the Rwandan Anglican Church, and both Brockenhurst and Sway maintain close links with the Diocese of Kigeme. Bishop Assiel spoke candidly about the impact of strict building regulations in Rwanda, which have forced the closure of over 170 chapels in Kigeme Diocese alone, leaving only 28 churches open across 67 parishes.

Yet, in the face of these closures, the church has flourished. Bishop Assiel described the rise of grassroots communities, where families gather in homes to sing, study scripture, and support one another. These house churches have become vital spaces for spiritual growth and mutual care.

A Message of Hope

Bishop Assiel’s visit reminded the deanery of the strength found in shared faith and the enduring bonds between their two communities. His words and presence offered encouragement and inspiration, reinforcing Lyndhurst Deanery’s commitment to global fellowship and local hospitality.
