Winchester Cathedral have been preparing to host a grand celebration of the Coronation of King Charles III this weekend. The centrepiece of the creative display is a giant suspended Corona made of dried flowers – all native species (willow fleur-de-lis, lavender bunches forming crosses, dried roses, herbs), and potted trees have replaced the candle standards around the cathedral, reflecting the King’s interests in conservation and the environment.
Judith Hutchinson the Cathedral’s lead Flower Arranger, came up with the beautiful design which has been brought to life throughout the week by her team, and Patrick Green the head gardener.

The Cathedral celebration plans include a public Thanksgiving Service on Friday 5 May at 7.00pm, featuring massed children’s choirs composed of 200 young people, The Spitfire Band, The Royal Corps of Drums, and other military musicians. On Saturday 6 May, there will be a screening of the Coronation with words and music provided, allowing everyone to participate in this historic event. See here for more details of the Coronation services at Winchester Cathedral.
Around the diocese there have been some other extraordinary crown-making efforts, including a giant crown created by Revd Rachel Noel and the team at St James Church Pokesdown. Have a look at some of the photos below…
