The Diocese is delighted to announce the names of the new Honorary Canons who have been appointed to Winchester Cathedral, in recognition of their dedicated service to the Cathedral, the Diocese and the wider church. Appointments are made by the Bishop of Winchester in consultation with the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. Honorary Canons form a bridge between the diocese and the Cathedral and meet to reflect and advise on the life of the Cathedral and to enrich the life of the diocese. Congratulations to the following new Canons:
Revd Angi Nutt was ordained in the Diocese of Winchester in 2011. Following parish ministry in Totton and Freemantle she joined the School of Mission as the IME2 Adviser and Assistant DDO in 2018, becoming DDO in 2020. She has been a volunteer chaplain and additional clergy at the Cathedral since her curacy and has been involved in special events such as the Mourning period for HM Queen Elizabeth, and Ash Wednesday activities. She is a keen rugby fan, supporting her home town team, Harlequins and Scotland. Married to Tim, they have 4 children and a golden retriever. Angi loves cold water swimming, a passion not shared by any of the family, even the dog. She was delighted to be invited to become an Hon Canon and is looking forward to deepening her involvement with the Cathedral even more.
Revd Thomas Wharton moved to Winchester Diocese from North Yorkshire in 2009 following a curacy in the Yorkshire Dales. He has served as Team Vicar and Chaplain to Enham in Andover Deanery, Priest in Charge at St. James’ West End, Southampton and has been Vicar at Romsey Abbey since 2018. Formerly a professional cellist, now a keen runner and member of Diocesan Synod.
Revd Michael Smith served his ministry in Winchester Diocese since ordination, in both the south and north. He is currently Rector of the Parish of Winton, Moordown and Charminster in Bournemouth and Area Dean of Bournemouth. He has been a Visitors’ Chaplain at the Cathedral for over 10 years and is part of the Mother Church Action & Advisory Group. He has served on Diocesan Synod for a number of years. Prior to moving to Bournemouth, he was Assistant Area Dean in Basingstoke.
Revd Andrew Micklefield is the Vicar of the Parish of the Resurrection, Alton. He joined to lead the team in May 2014 after being Rector of the Parish of the Itchen Valley, near Winchester. He is also Chair of the House of Clergy in Winchester Diocese and a member of the Church of England’s General Synod.
Andrew is married to Fiona, a local Headteacher and has a daughter, Emily and a son, Daniel and a dog called Ottie. Andrew is a keen amateur musician, playing piano and organ.
Revd Jeff Williams leads the Education team and oversees all of its work with schools, academies and Further and Higher education. He works alongside and advises the Bishop of Winchester and the Bishop of Portsmouth, and the Diocesan Board of Education in the formation of strategy and all aspects of education policy. Jeff formerly worked at the Department of Education for 12 years, and before that as a Secondary Headteacher.
Revd Professor Liz Stuart Associate Priest at St Matthew’s with St Paul’s Church, Winchester. She is Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at the University of Winchester, having joined the University in 1998 as Professor of Christian Theology. Prior to that she taught Religious Studies and Theology at the University of Glamorgan and University College St Mark and St John. She is also is a bank chaplain for Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust.
Alison Coulter has been Chair of Laity in our diocese and a member of Bishop’s Council for 10 years, and has recently been elected Vice Chair of the House of Laity for General Synod. She is a member of the Archbishop’s Council and a member of the new Strategic Mission and Ministry Investment Board. She is also Programme Director for Operational Development for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
Gary Carpenter is a chartered accountant with over 30 years’ experience operating at board level as finance director or its equivalent in a number of international commercial organisations in the manufacturing, shipping and consultancy sectors. He has been Chief Finance Officer at Winchester Cathedral since November 2020. He splits his time between London and Winchester and is currently a member of the Audit and Governance Committee for the Diocese of Southwark and a Lay Reader, licensed in the Diocese of Southwark.
Alison Evans as its Chief Operating Officer of Winchester Cathedral, overseeing the care and conservation of the cathedral church and its estate, and contributing to the development and implementation of its strategic objectives. Previously Alison worked for 13 years for the National Trust and was a university lecturer for some years, and is now on a Diocesan appointment on the Board of Governors at the University of Winchester.
