Launch of the EDGE Hub Café in Southampton

EDGE is a Christian missional community group, based on the Townhill Estate Southampton, who have been involved in the local area for around seven years, working in conjunction with Ascension Church and the Church Army. The community is delighted to announce the opening of its brand new EDGE Hub Café, a place for local people to come together. Located at 121-123 Meggeson Avenue, previously the old Council Housing Office, the café is currently open Monday to Thursday, 8.45am-1pm.

EDGE stands for ‘Every Day God Encounters’, as at the heart of the project is the knowledge that God cares about every detail of normal people’s everyday lives. For EDGE volunteers, reaching out to others and impacting their daily lives in tangible ways is a demonstration of the way God loves us. As part of its work supporting and revitalising the local community, EDGE has put on a number of events over the years, such as a Summer Fun Event last August, encouraging members of the community to come together in fun and fellowship.

The new cafe space is right in the centre of the estate, a perfect spot for people to gather. The row of shops where it’s located has been mostly empty for 7 years, so it’s been wonderful to see it full of life and people again. Over the half term, the team organised two activity days, based around Pancake Day and Valentines themes, which attracted over 160 people, mostly families, who came to have fun. Someone even set a pancake flipping record of 68 flips in a row!

Our hope and prayer is that we can be a presence here in the community, with Jesus at the centre. But that people feel welcomed and loved here whatever their faith.

Local volunteers donated their time and skills to cleaning, painting and turning the room into a café, which means residents can now use the Hub to meet friends, enjoy a slice of cake or a hot drink. There is a small quiet space if privacy is needed for a chat or for prayer. All of the tables have a sign on them saying ‘We believe in the power of prayer. Please ask one of the volunteers if you would like someone to pray with you.’ The hub is also host to the EDGE community’s regular Bible study group that meets mid week.

The Hub will also be putting on various events for all to attend and enjoy. These include a creative activity and writing session on Wednesday mornings, and Wriggle and Rhyme hour for carers and toddlers on Thursday mornings. Booking is not required for these events – local residents are encouraged to simply come along! Other plans for the future include youth drop ins, a lunch club for older people, and evening events such as open mic and quiz nights.
