It was a joyful occasion on Saturday 21 October when over 80 people from across the diocese were licensed as lay ministers at a service at Winchester Cathedral. It was a time to celebrate and affirm the calling of God’s people into various ministries, including preaching, leading worship, offering pastoral care, leading people in prayer, and engaging in mission beyond the walls of the church.
A further eight people were licensed who have been in training for three years in order to assist their incumbents in all aspects of ministry and ministry. And for the first time, Bishop David, as Warden of Readers, commissioned four Deputy Wardens of Readers to assist him in continuing to nurture and encourage this area of service.
Candidates Sharing their Experiences
As part of the service, four people shared their experiences of training through the School of Mission: two LLMS (Licensed Lay Ministers), Simon Charles Day from the Benefice of Tadley with Pamber Heath and Silchester, and Daniel Stephen Sanderson from the New Forest Edge Benefice; Pat Wootten from Nursling with Rownhams Benefice, who trained for a BPP (Bishops’ Permission to Preach); and Sochima Ezeanowai, from the Benefice of Oakley with Wootton St Lawrence, who trained for a BCM in Children, Youth and Families. It was wonderful to hear their inspiring stories of faith and growth!
